Baden and its surroundings are a paradise for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers! Whether you want to discover spectacular panoramas, historic sites or hidden natural gems – there is a route to suit everyone.
From challenging ridge hikes to mysterious caves and historic castle ruins: these three tours offer unforgettable experiences in the diverse landscape of Aargau.
Lägerngrat ridge walk: stunning views for experienced hikers
A true classic among the hiking trails around Baden is the Lägerngrat ridge walk, which leads from Baden to Regensberg. The route offers impressive views, with a hiking time of between three and four hours. You’ll be rewarded with magnificent views over the entire region and its breathtaking nature.
Important: This trail is only suitable for experienced hikers. The Jura limestone can become slippery and dangerous when wet. If the path is too slippery, you can take an alternative route along the mountainside, which is safer. Nevertheless, you need to be surefooted and have a good head for heights to be able to do this hike.

Walhalla Cave: a journey into the past
Walhalla Cave is a fascinating destination for those interested in both history and nature. Originally, it was just a rock crevice on the slope, known to hunters and foresters as early as the 19th century. It has been established that the crevice was expanded before 1919 and later further developed by four young men.
Walhalla Cave is located on the southern slope of the Lägern mountain, in rough terrain below the Lägern saddle between Wettingerhorn and Burghorn. To reach the cave, it is best to park at Mooshalde. A little further up, you will find a sign pointing in the right direction.
Important: This excursion is only suitable for experienced and surefooted hikers and climbers who are not afraid of heights.
Schartenfels: an exciting hike with historic significance
If you prefer to stay in Baden and want to enjoy a beautiful hike from your doorstep, the trail to Schartenfels is the perfect choice. This hike takes you to the remains of a medieval castle and offers not only fascinating history but also stunning views of Baden and its surroundings.
The hike begins in the centre of Baden and follows well-marked paths to Schartenfels, which sits atop a hill overlooking the town. The route takes approximately two to 2.5 hours and is suitable for hikers of all levels, as it features a mostly gentle ascent.
A particular highlight of this hike is a historic castle ensemble from the 13th century. Today, you can explore the ruins of the castle and immerse yourself in history. Along the way, you will enjoy impressive views of the town of Baden and the Aare Valley.
Tip: Take a short break at Schartenfels and enjoy the panoramic views, it’s worth it!
