Looking for a short break near Zurich that feels a million miles away but takes only minutes to get to? Baden — the historic spa town on the Limmat River, not to be confused with Baden-Baden in Germany — is the perfect choice for a weekend get-away. Here’s a ready-to-follow itinerary, with BLUME. at the heart of Baden’s spa quarter as your base.
Friday: Arrival
Getting here couldn’t be easier. Direct trains run from Zurich main station to Baden roughly every 15 to 20 minutes, and the journey takes as little as 15 minutes. Coming straight from the airport? You’ll be in Baden in around 35 minutes, no change required. From Baden station, it’s a short walk through the old town to the spa quarter and you’ll find BLUME. at Kurplatz 4.
Check in, drop your bags and ease into the weekend. Start the evening with dinner in the light-filled Atrium – complete with seasonal food and a glass of Ammonit, the hotel’s own wine from its estate vineyard. No need to go far on your first night; let the 600-year-old ambience set the tone.
Saturday: Old town, thermal water and fine dining
Morning — Explore the old town. Baden’s car-free old town is one of the best preserved in Switzerland. Wander the cobbled lanes of the Halde, browse the boutiques, and cross the covered wooden bridge over the Limmat River to Landvogt Castle, now part of the Historic Museum.
Midday — Visit Stein Castle. Walk up to the ruins of Stein Castle, Baden’s landmark, for a sweeping panorama over the Limmat valley. If you’d rather venture further afield, check out our post on the region’s best hikes.
Afternoon — Thermal water. Return to BLUME. and go straight to the historic Roman baths, where Switzerland’s most mineral-rich thermal water flows straight from the source into the private tubs — the perfect reward for tired legs. A sauna and a steam room complete the wind-down.
Evening — Dinner and wine. Round off the day with a candlelight dinner on the Atrium Gallery, paired with a tasting of our Ammonit wines. For a night out, see our guide to Baden’s best bars.
Sunday: River, relaxation and a slow goodbye
Morning — A walk along the Limmat River. Follow the riverside path and take in the town from the river shore; you can also follow the Limmat Culture Trail, with over twenty artworks dotted along the trail. For a dip, head just outside the centre to the “Wasserschloss,” where the Aare, Reuss and Limmat Rivers meet (central Baden’s current is too strong for swimming).
Late morning — Culture or relax. Baden has a broad museum scene if the weather turns (see our post on the town’s museums). Otherwise, linger over a late breakfast in the Atrium among the flowers.
Afternoon — Head home. With direct trains every 15 to 20 minutes, you can leave whenever suits — Zurich is just minutes away. With the included Cityticket Baden, local transport is free of charge during your weekend getaway.
